Happy Durga Puja

Posted on October 6th, 2008 by Jugal Kishore Bajaj

I wish all a very Happy Durga Puja. Durga Puja is the main festival in the whole of North East India and the whole work comes to standstill for one week.

Durga Puja

Here is a report from how Kolkata is in this Durga Puja:

Thousands of people dressed in all their finery, traffic moving at a snail’s pace, crowded marquees…That heady, unmistakable spirit of Durga Puja descended on this city as the biggest festival of West Bengal kicked off Sunday.

Be it residents or celebrities from outside like Shah Rukh Khan, people came in hordes to join the festivities for Mahashasti, even though it was just the first day of the five-day festival during which Hindu goddess Durga is worshipped in ‘pandals’ or marquees all over the city.

‘I decided to visit puja pandals with my family today to avoid the crowds in the next few days. But like me, thousands of people were also out visiting the pandals on Mahashasti,’ said Mainakh Bhattacharya of Howrah.

The celebrations formally started with ‘Devi Bodhon’, a ritual to propitiate and welcome goddess Durga and her four children. While the idols of the goddess were a huge attraction, so was the craftsmanship of the numerous marquees under which they were housed.

The puja, besides being a religious festival, provides a common platform for people cutting across religious lines to immerse themselves in cultural activities.

A Kolkata Police official told IANS from the control room: ‘Traffic movement is quite slow on the city roads because of the heavy crowd of pandal-hoppers. The footfalls are high, especially at major marquis in and around Kolkata.’

He said traffic was moving at a snail’s pace in the central and eastern parts of the city. ‘Many police booths have been set up to take care of the traffic situation during Durga Puja.’

Many politicians, including External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, were busy inaugurating various puja pandals in Kolkata.

While most communist leaders stayed away from the rituals, party workers did put up stalls selling Marxist literature near the big puja pandals.

Matinee idols like Shah Rukh and cricketer Harbhajan Singh were also seen inaugurating community pujas.

The oldest community puja is being celebrated at Balaram Bose Ghat Road in the southern part of the city. The puja here was started in 1910.

India Blooms, a newly launched reference portal on India, is bringing alive the sights and sounds of Kolkata’s famous Durga Puja for netizens across the globe.

‘Bengalis across the world miss Kolkata like anything during Durga Puja. But they can savour the delights of pandal-hopping at the click of the mouse at www.indiablooms.com,’ said an India Blooms spokesman.

‘The site also captures everything in visuals, from the making of the goddess to the famous Kolkata pujas, in all their splendour. Our elaborate section titled Durga Darshan is a visual treat for all those Indians scattered outside Kolkata. Kolkatans can also enjoy the flavour of puja online and even take part in a photo contest,’ he said.

According to Hindu mythology, the festivities and prayers begin with the symbolic arrival of the goddess on earth on the sixth day of the first quarter of the moon and ends on Dashami or the tenth day.

However, the puja rituals begin from Mahasaptami, which falls on Monday.

Traditionally, very pandal has an idol of Goddess Durga depicting her as slaying the demon Mahishashur. She is shown astride a lion and wields an array of weapons in her 10 arms.

Raja Hasan
Here is an analysis of Raja Hasan`s most awesome performances in Ek Se Badhkar Ek which were hundred percent 10/10 performances. The way he sang the songs and that too live I don’t think at this time I can see any other singer doing it. I present them in order of my liking that is from best to good.

The best performance in the show was Nasha hi Nasha. He sang the song so easily but when you hear the song you can see the high notes he took in the song from the start to the end and the feel he gave to the song was awesome. Here is the video of the song:

The second best performance for me was Khwaja meren Khwaja. He sang the song divinely and gave full feelings to each and every lyrics of the song which was the need of the song. Here is the video of the song:

The third best performance was power singing by Raja Hasan in the song Lagan Lagi and for which he got standing ovation by the Judges and Guests Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja which was edited by ZEE. Here is the performance for you:

The fourth perfect performance with lot of style and introduction of never heard variations was Ramta Jogi. Here is the video for you:

The fifth best performance by Raja Hasan was Tadap Tadap Ke where he again gave full feelings to the lyrics of the song. Here is the video for you:

The sixth best performance was the Nusrat Fateh song Sajna which was perfectly sung by Raja. Here is the video for you:

Finally although Raja had a bad throat on that day but the way he sang Yaara Silli Silli was out of the world. The variations he took with that throat was amazing. Here is the video for you:

Posted on October 5th, 2008 by Jugal Kishore Bajaj

Bollywood’s King Khan, Shah Rukh, will be the star attraction of the Zee Carnival - a two-day entertainment and lifestyle extravaganza to be held in Singapore next weekend.

Shahrukh Khan and Raja Hasan

Already the Shah Rukh fever is catching on. Apart from his fans among the 200,000-strong Indian expatriate community in Singapore, large crowds are also expected from neighbouring Malaysia.

Shah Rukh has a sizeable fan following in Singapore, thanks to the Indian expatriate community. His photographs often find their way into the lifestyle sections of newspapers here, while a leading daily newspaper recently carried a two-page interview with him.

Not just Indians, but the growing numbers of other Bollywood fans in Singapore had flocked to cinemas when Shah Rukh’s two recent blockbusters, “Om Shanti Om” and “Chak De! India” were released here.

At the carnival, Shah Rukh’s fans will have a chance to get up close and personal with him.

Bollywood’s reigning heart throb will make numerous appearances on both days, spending time interacting with the crowds, signing autographs and allowing his fans to get their photographs taken with him.

Apart from King Khan, the other stars who will make an appearance are mainly from the Zee TV stable, including the host of the “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” show Aditya Narayan, the show’s singers Raja Hasan and Poonam Jatav, Iqbaal Khan and the singing duo, Sharad and Kirti Kelkar, better known by their screen names, Nahar and Chandni.

The Zee event also includes a lifestyle segment showcasing fashion and design trends from across the globe. TV show host and chef Sanjeev Kapoor of “Khana Khazana” fame will be giving cookery demonstrations. That is expected to be a big draw.

The carnival on Oct 11 and 12 is being held at Suntec City, a popular conference and exhibition space in the heart of downtown Singapore. It will be preceded by the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conference of overseas Indians which concludes a day earlier on Oct 10.
